Terminology used in this article
"tweeters" produce the treble (cymbals, etc)
"midrange drive units" produce the midrange (human voices, etc)
"woofers" produce the bass (bass drums, double bass, etc)
"bass/mid drive units" produces the bass and midrange.
This is a reasonable compromise for cheaper speakers.

 


 
 
Features of our £2,500 or £1,800 "10 inch - High End" speakers
 10 inch dedicated woofer to produce the bass (e.g. bass drums)
10 inch woofers are 3 times bigger than 6.5 inch bass/mid drive units !
10 inch woofers are 3 times bigger than 6.5 inch bass/mid drive units,
when you ignore the "useless" metal frame and part of the "useless" surrounds
and calculate the AREA of the MOVING cone.
10 inch woofers are still smaller than 22 inch Kick Bass drums,
but 10 inch woofer are 3 times more capable of reproducing Kick Bass Drums
than 6.5 inch bass/mid drive units !
 4.5 inch dedicated midrange to produce the midrange (e.g. human voices)
Our 4.5 inch midrange is a better match for the modern 1 inch tweeter
Modern 1 inch tweeter are marvellous, because they can go up to 20,000 Hertz
(which the generally accepted limit of human hearing).
Unfortunately, tiny 1 inch domes cannot handle bass drums,
so you to filter out the bass with a crossover at about 4,000 Hertz.
If you have a 4,000 Hertz cross over, it mean than
half of the 4,000 Hertz goes to the tweeter,
and half of the 4,000 Hertz will go to the midrange.
Even at 8,000 Hertz, a fair amount of 8,000 Hertz will go to the midrange.
The midrange must be able to cope with 8,000 Hertz
(even though the cross over frequency is 4,000 Hertz !)
Some 6.5 inch bass/midrange drive units with Kevlar cones, Carbon Fibre cones or glass fibre cones
has an uneven jagged frequency response between 4,000 to 8,000 Hertz,
caused by severe cone break-up.
Our 4.5 inch midrange is smaller, has less cone break-up at high frequency,
and it will go smoothly up to 8,000 hertz, before falling away gracefully,
without any jagged frequency response , without any severe cone break-up.
The result is very audible. You have our money back guarantee (less £30 return carriage) of:-
1. Greatly reduced and well controlled sibilance on female voices !
      (Sibilance is when words like "his" sound like "Hissssssk")
2. Our midranges do not have resonance around 4,000 Hertz to 8,000 Hertz,
    so our speakers do not sound artificially bright, and irritating !
3. Sweet treble. Sometimes, people wrongly blame the tweeter, when they should be blaming
    the terrible frequency response of the midrange at 4,000 Hertz to 8,000 Hertz !

This is about 10 time heavier than the "typical" cross over for the "typical" speakers !

Most of the capacitors are BIG EXPENSIVE high voltage polypropylene capacitors made especially for us
Big heavy duty "Air cored" inductors for tweeters.
"Air cored" inductors for woofers have will have a DC resistance of almost 1 ohm,
and will affect the Q of the woofer dramatically (i.e. encourages boomy bass)
For our woofers, we use BIG EXPENSIVE inductors that look like small transformers !
These big inductors will NOT overload and "saturate".
These is essential for LOUD CLEAN DEEP bass and LOUD clean midrange !
The low DC resistance will help to keep down the Q of the woofer, for TIGHTER bass without boom.
"Hose pipe" size professional tri-wiring cable.
( Flimsy silver cables are a waste of money, and affects the frequency response badly ! )

 
 
6.5 inch bass/mid drive units produces "blur" voices when reproducing a loud bass drum
The "typical" modern speakers uses one or two 6.5 inch bass/mid drive units.
6.5 inch bass/mid try to produce BOTH the bass AND midrange AT THE SAME TIME.
This is a reasonable compromise for cheaper speakers.
This is a reasonable compromise, when you are trying to produce £300 speakers.
It is cheaper to use ONE drive unit to produce the bass AND midrange.
There isn't ANY SONIC ADVANTAGE in producing £1,000 to £6,000 speakers
with 6.5 inch bass/mid drive units !
There is a limit to what you can do with small cars and small 6.5 inch bass/mid drive units.
6.5 inch bass/mid drive units CANNOT produce
LOUD DEEP bass drums AND "crystal clear" human voices AT THE SAME TIME.
When a LOUD bass drums starts, human voices becomes so blur that you cannot hear the lyrics of the song.
This is NOT a problem with BIG 3 way speakers like ours.
Human voices becomes clearer, when you turn up the volume !
Human voices come out of our 4.5 inch dedicated midrange.
Bass drums come out of the dedicated 10 inch woofer,
so the bass drums do not interfere with the 4.5 inch dedicated midrange,

The bass of 6.5 inch drive units versus 10 inch dedicated woofers
There is a limit to what you can do with small cars and small speakers.
It does NOT matter if the small speaker cost £300 or £6,000,
small speakers CANNOT produce LOUD DEEP bass in LARGE rooms !

who WRONGLY say that small speakers have good bass.

so they try to get as much bass as possible out of 6.5 inch drive units.
This results in a "high Q" of 1 or more and a "bass hump" of 3 dB.
In layman's term, lousy boomy bass !

            not enough bass (with low Q of 0.7 or less)
       or "boomy" poorly defined bass (with high Q of of 1.5 or more, and a "bass hump" of 3 dB)

Please ignore silly claims that the 6.5 inch drive units can move 12 mm !
6.5 inch drive units can only move 12 mm, if you prodded it with your finger,
Most 6.5 inch drive units can only move forward and backward by 3 mm, before distorting badly.
When I say distorting, I do NOT mean rattles or other really nasty sound.
I mean 5% to 10% distortion, so that human voices becomes VERY BLURRED !

We are not stupid enough to build a strong cabinet,
and then cut a big hole to mount a big flimsy piece of
plastic for the bi-wiring terminals.
We cut a small hole (about 1 inch) and mount a very strong Neutrik socket.
Sometimes, the Neutrik socket is reinforced with metal !
